Dragonflies are one of the most fascinating insects.
A dragonfly is a symbol of sense of self, which comes with maturity. It represents renewal, positive forces and power of life. A pair of mating dragonflies is believed to be a symbol of love. Dragonflies, or damselflies, were connected to Freya the Norse goddess of love, fertility and warfare.
For the Japanese, the animal symbolism of a dragonfly is associated with good luck, prosperity, swiftness, strength, peace, purity, harmony, happiness and courage. In China, people associate the dragonfly with prosperity, harmony and as a good luck charm.
Among Native Americans, it is a sign of happiness, activity, speed and purity. For the Navajo they symbolize pure water. To some Native Americans, dragonflies are the souls of the dead. In ancient lore, the dragonfly represents transformation, adaptation and insight.
Dragonfly is the essence of the winds of change, the messages of wisdom and enlightenment; and the communication from the elemental world. For the Zuni tribe, dragonflies are a symbol of spring and good harvests.
In ancient Swedish folklore, the dragonfly is called Skams besman, which translate to Devil’s Steelyard. This name is derived from the shape of a dragonfly’s body. If you use a little imagination, its body shape begins to resemble a weighting tool. The people believed that the Devil used the dragonfly to weigh people’s souls. The dragonfly would circle a person to get the measure of their soul. If your soul was found wanting, you could expect to be seriously injured in the near future. Today, dragonflies are considered holy animals in the Scandinavian countries.
This piece is hand painted by myself. I use opaque inks specially formulated to adhere to metal. After I apply the paints/inks I heat treat the piece and the color bonds to the brass becoming enamel-like, so the paint does not crack and flake off. Since each piece is individually painted the one you receive will be slightly different than the one in the picture.
All of my jewelry is made with quality solid brass. The Brass does not contain nickel, which is what most people are allergic to. You do not need to worry about an antique finish wearing off to reveal a copper or silver color underneath. You will get warm golden highlights where the metal touches your skin and polishes the patina off. I call this making the piece your own……..
Thank you for looking,
